LINGAYEN—Chinese investments are expected to pour into the province soon following a three-day visit last week of Consul Chen Lai Ping, head of the Office of the Consulate of the Chinese Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

Chen and his delegation, who were welcomed by Governor Amado Espino Jr. and other officials of Pangasinan at the Urduja House, outlined some of the projects his country are looking into in Pangasinan.

These include food processing factories, fish terminal and storage facilities, a cement plant, container port and tourism.

Consul    Chen       and members of his delegation, together with officers of the Pangasinan Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce, also toured various places of interest in the province.

They visited the proposed Eco-Resort and Recreational Park along the Lingayen beach, 100 Islands in Alaminos City, the Sual Coal-Fired Power Plant and the San Roque Multi-Purpose Project in San Manuel.

Chen said he will push for a robust business relationship between China and Pangasinan which, he added, started close trade relations as early as 1,000 years ago.

“We have good impressions about Pangasinan, especially its vast agricultural and natural resources and we are confident areas of cooperation between your province and its counterparts in China will be established soon enough to help boost the provincial government’s immediate and long-range programs for progress,” Chen said.

FISHPORT

For his part, Espino informed the foreign visitors that a group of Chinese investors have also drawn up plans for a fishport in Pangasinan.

The group is still looking for a local bank to guarantee loans and the equity needed for the projected initial capital.

He said the Limahong Channel   facing the Lingayen Gulf is ideal for the establishment of a fish port and terminal.

The channel was dug up by Chinese corsair Limahong in the late 1500s as his escape route to the sea when he was pursued by Spanish captain, Juan de Salcedo, and his men.

Consul Chen expressed the need to strengthen the communication between Pangasinan and China to include regular trade and economic exchange visits and consultations among Chinese and Pangasinan delegations.

He said the Chinese consulate based in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte will arrange the projected trips of Pangasinan officials to China early next year.

“Basic information about Pangasinan and its investment potentials are already included in our website, but we need more adequate and detailed data,” the Chinese consul said.

Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and other key officials led by Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan attended the briefing.-LM
