FQDMFSSHS studes shine in skills tilts

THREE students of the Lyceum Northwestern University’s Francisco Q. Duque Medical Foundation Special Science High School stood out as among the best in various Competitions.

Jamaica Marie Calicdan, 15, a junior student, was chosen member of the Philippine team to the China Junior High School Math Olympiad to be held in Shijiazhuang, China on August 5 to 9, 2007. He is the only student from Northern Luzon who qualified in the national team.

Marynel Dixie Brao, a senior student, captured the championship in this year’s Agew na Dagupan ‘Sukata’y Talisiw’, a quiz bee competition.

Ma. Dyanne Claudia Ultado, FQDMFSSHS supreme student president, was elected president of the Dagupan City Supreme Student Government Federation.

“I’m very happy to have qualified for the team,” Calicdan told LNU president Dr. Gonzalo Duque during a courtesy call.

Calicdan was chosen by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines after her participation in an intensive in-house training and rigid screening process last summer in Metro Manila and Iloilo City.

This is the second time for Calicdan to participate in the international math competition. Last year, she was part of the 24-member Philippine team to the 2006 China Middle School Mathematical Olympiad in Shandong Province, where she won third prize in her category.

Calicdan said that while other students find mathematics boring and intimidating, she found it exciting and enjoyable.

“It’s just a matter of understanding it,” Calicdan said. “Once you understand it, it’s actually easy,” she added.

Brao, for her part, said that the quiz bee Dagupan City history was participated in by 10 public and private schools in the city on June 18.

“It was tough,” she said, adding that she reviewed a week before the competition using local historian Resituto Basa’s “The Story of Dagupan”.

She was coached by Chona Castillo, her History teacher.

Ultado was elected from among student council presidents representing different high schools in the city.

FQDMSSFSHS supreme student council adviser Digna Rosario was also elected as president of the Dagupan City SSG Advisers Association.
