Alvarez to Pangasinan voters: Think big and beyond

FORMER Senator Heherson Alvarez, visiting Dagupan City over the weekend, called on the voters of the fourth district of Pangasinan to think big and beyond their locality.

Endorsing the candidacy of Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., Alvarez said “the   whole nation will suffer” if the Speaker is not re-elected.

Alvarez noted that De Venecia is now on his fourth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives, the longest reigning speaker in the history of the country and presently chairs the powerful standing committees of the Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Alvarez is vice president for Luzon of the ruling party Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, which is headed by De Venecia as president and co-founder.

Speaking to local newsmen, Alvarez said De Venecia is an asset for the whole nation while his opponent, Mayor Benjamin Lim of Dagupan City, may be equally industrious but lacks   the caliber to become a national and global leader.

Saying it is not easy to produce a Speaker of the House, Alvarez underscored that De Venecia is only the second Speaker from Pangasinan.

The first was Eugenio Perez Sr. of the then sitio Obong in the barrio of Basista in San Carlos.

Alvarez, whose roots are from Binmaley town, said the people of his home province Isabela, which has yet to produce a Speaker, envy the people of Pangasinan.

Alvarez also brushed aside rumors that there is a plot to oust De Venecia from the speakership, saying he does  not know anyone else who has the caliber to do what De Venecia had done for his district, the whole country and the world.
