Star-studded Mangaldan bikefest kicks off today

BIGTIME cycling returns to Mangaldan today with defending champion and Philippine standout Reynaldo Navarro aiming to become the second back-to-back winner of the town’s annual road battle as he heads an elite roster of riders chasing the P10,000 top prize plus a trophy.

The bikefest, dubbed this year as “Werweran XIV”, will be undertaken in two categories under the auspices of Mayor Herminio Romero, town fiesta executive committee chief Kgd. Judith Gubatan and the Sangguniang Bayan members.

The elite-pro event highlighting the whole day occasion, which kicks off at 11:00 a.m., will start and finish across the municipal hall of Mangaldan. The route will see the 80 racers traversing the neighboring municipalities of San Jacinto, San Fabian and back to Mangaldan nine times with total distance of 162 kilometers.

Aside from the San Jacinto-native Navarro, top guns in Philippine cycling like Tour Pilipinas champions Santi Barnachea, Warren Davadilla, Arnel Quirimit and 1996 Marlboro Tour titlist Victor Espiritu have registered and are expected to participate.

Other luminaries expected to show up are Tour runners-up Lucien Llyod Reynante and Elmo Ramos, Jr., Emilito Atilano, Pangasinan’s budding cyclists Ericson Obosa, Sherwin Carrera, Renato Sembrano, Ariel Flores, 2005 SEA Games gold medalist Alfie Catalan and seven-time sprint king Enrique Domingo.

First and second runners-up will pocket P5,000 and P4,000, respectively and also with a trophy each. Fourth placer will earn P3,000, while fifth finisher will get P2,000 and sixth to tenth placers will receive P1,000 apiece.

Fourth to tenth placers will also receive a medal each and 11th to 40th finishers will be given an incentive amount of P200 each.

The master-executive category starts at 9:00 a.m. and will traverse the same route three times, or with an approximate total distance of 54 kilometers and with a maximum of 75 participants. Cash prizes, trophies, medals are also up for grabs plus gift certificates courtesy of Magic stores.

Eleven special summit sprint prizes on both categories will be sponsored by Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Al Fernandez, Jr., Blandino Caguioa, Joey Se, Joey Coz, Rey Corpuz, Engr. Rodolfo Dion, Adonis Peralta and Kgd. Angel Gumarang.

The pedal-by-pedal account will be aired live from start to finish over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan DZRH Dagupan 1161 KHz AM, compliments of Alpha Insurance Company.
