LINGAYEN— Mayor Ernesto Castañeda has expressed optimism that his town, the capital of Pangasinan, will be converted into the fifth city of the province within the year.

Castañeda said the people of Lingayen, in various forums conducted by the municipal government, have expressed their full support for the cityhood bid, which was initiated two years ago particularly after the local government has given the people assurance that the conversion will not result in drastic rise in tax rates.

The mayor said once Lingayen becomes a city, majority of the residents of the town as well as members of the business sector stand to benefit.

He also expressed confidence that the town has already met the minimum requirements for cityhood as far as area and population are concerned.

To date, Lingayen is among the first class towns in Pangasinan with the biggest potential to become a city after Dagupan, San Carlos, Urdaneta and Alaminos cities.

Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor, who came to Lingayen recently, said he will work with Rep. Amado Espino of the second district to push for Lingayen’s cityhood bid.–APE
