URDANETA CITY – Employees of the city government heaved a sigh of relief when they learned that the Sangguniang Panlungsod shelved its plan to implement a retrenchment program.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. confirmed that the members of the SP had a change of heart on the retrenchment plan in consideration of the deepening economic crisis that would impact on the employee who will be retrenched.

He said the plan was adopted earlier by the city’s lawmakers in a move to cut down expenses of the city government’s operations.

The councilors have also determined that the current budget is still sufficient to cover the salaries of the casual employees without canceling any of the calendared projects in the city.

“We realized that those who will lose their jobs will find difficulty finding another employment at this time of the economic crisis,” he said.

He explained that the retrenchment plan is in keeping with the call for austerity of   President Gloria Arroyo, but since the government can still afford to pay the salaries, it saw merit in suspending the plan.

He also assured that the city government will have no problem paying its loan since all the financial obligations are budgeted. – APE
