Police, AFP Comelec join forces for peaceful election
STA. BARBARA-- Security control centers in several provinces will be established by the Philippine National Police (PNP), in collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to monitor potential and preempt election-related violence for the duration of the campaign period until the 2010 polls.
          PNP Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa, speaking to local newsmen Tuesday, said the areas have been determined based on reported incidents of violence in 2004 and 2007 elections.

Nationwide gun amnesty program reaches target
STA. BARBARA—The government’s gun amnesty program has surpassed the three percent target for reducing loose firearms in the country, the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief said.
        General Jesus Verzosa was in town Tuesday for the inauguration of the 1st Community Police Assistance Center and Police Emergency Response Center.

Cop chief rescues “angel” atop belfry
SAN FABIAN--Just as the police force of this small town was celebrating their traditional office Christmas party last week, a man decided to create a spectacle by climbing the 500-foot tall bell tower of the Catholic Church here.
       The merrymaking had to be cut short as Chief Inspector Abubakar Mangelen Jr., the police chief, himself led the rescue operation of 22-year Bryan Centino.

 






 


 

 




 






 

 


 

 

 

Typhoon victims get cash aid
LINGAYEN--The provincial government extended P620,000 cash in financial assistance to the families of the 62 people who died when typhoon "Pepeng" struck the province in October.
        Each family received P10,000 in cash plus one sack of rice, donated by Oriental Mindoro province through Governor Arnan Panganiban.

Capitol gets mobile water treatment plant
LINGAYEN--The provincial government received one unit of mobile trailer with mounted water treatment plant from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) last December 17.
       Governor Amado Espino Jr., who requested for the equipment earlier this year through then Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., said the newly acquired trailer will be used to sustain the supply of potable water in the province, particularly during the calamities.

LU prov’l study group impressed with Capitol
LINGAYEN--A delegation from the neighboring province of La Union heaped praises on the newly renovated capitol building here saying it creates an environment that inspires good public service.
        "It's beautiful and clean, the perfect environment that people are really looking for… to serve most effectively and efficiently as true public servants,” said Geoffrey Tilan, La Union provincial administrator who led 59 officials and employees of the provincial governor’s office on a study tour here on December 21-22.
