TENSION RISES IN SITIO RUSSIA
Squatters, policemen
clash
NO demolition, only relocation.
This was stressed by City Legal
Officer George Mejia, as he clarified
the circumstances that led to a violent
clash between informal settlers and the
policemen accompanying a team from the
city government armed with crow bars and
hammers and wearing head gears at Sitio
Russia in Barangay Bonuan Binloc last
June 15.

Ombudsman
joins buried medicines probe
THE Office of the Ombudsman has taken
cognizance of the buried expired
medicines and medical equipment in two
separate sites of the provincial capitol
compound and will send its investigators
to help determine culpabilities.
This was gleaned in a
letter received by Governor Amado Espino
Jr. on June 15 from Mark Jalandoni,
deputy Ombudsman, who said his office
will join the investigation in order to
expedite the filing of cases against
responsible officials.

PUNCHLINE
Rich
Squatter, Poor Squatter
By Ermin Garcia Jr.
The poor
squatters in Sitio Russia are obviously being misled by the affluent
making the former believe that they have every right to stay in the
land they occupy.
Granting for the sake of argument
that they may have the right to it, it
is not likely that the court or even the
national government will easily decide
in their favor just yet, not for another
decade. Before they can make themselves
believe that they have the upper hand in
this imbroglio, what is crystal clear
from the very beginning is they can't
ever claim they have the land titles to
their name, meaning, the burden is on
them to prove that they are entitled to
the land. |
