Rescued fishermen are home
INFANTA---A bus of the provincial government was sent to Manila on Thursday to fetch the five fishermen rescued in the South China Sea after their fishing vessel capsized at the height of Typhoon Emong on May 7.
        They were met at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and joined by their grateful relatives on the trip back home.

Anda still awaiting help from Malacanang
ANDA--The mayor of this island municipality, one of the hardest hit by Typhoon Emong last May 7, decries the absence of any assistance from the national government almost a month after the calamity.
        "I don't understand the national government why wala pa siyang sinasabi kung ano ang gagawin nila sa amin," Mayor Nestor Pulido said last week.

Erap visits W. Pangasinan; pooh-poohs Lakas-Kampi
ALAMINOS CITY--Former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada, a leader of the opposition, belittled the administration's Lakas-Kampi merger, saying that it is nothing but a new "publicity" gimmick as the two parties have always been under the control of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
        "As far as I'm concerned,
isang partido lang yan. Kung ano ang sinasabi ni GMA ay sumusunod yong dalawang partidong yan," said Estrada during his Lakbay Pasasalamat caravan here.

Police help reunite father and daughter
STA. BARBARA--Municipal authorities here intervened Wednesday afternoon to reunite a five-year old girl with her father after the latter's mother-in-law took custody of her without the father's consent.
       The girl's mother is reportedly working abroad.
        Personnel of the Women and Protection Center of the local police led by PO3 Ela Penullar and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Wilma Coquia searched two provinces to "rescue" the girl at the request of her father.


 

 

PNP murals impress police chief
LINGAYEN— Murals painted by amateur artists in the perimeter wall of the Police Provincial Office (PPO) impressed and delighted Police Director General Jesus Verzosa, chief of the Philippine National Police.
        "The murals depict the various activities of the Philippine National Police and how they should cooperate with the community which is part and parcel of policing in the Philippines," Verzosa said.

Sta. Barbara's feed and read program gets more support
STA. BARBARA—The "Feed and Read to Lead" program, initiated by the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1976 and organized by the local police municipal government here, continues to get support from various sectors. 
        In the most recent session held May 23, JC Hardware, a dealer of construction materials, co-hosted the program participated in by 400 children from various barangays.
 

47% dropout rate among students seen
Provincial officials have expressed alarm over the high drop rate, now estimated at 47%, among elementary graduates who are not pursuing secondary education in public schools, particularly in areas within the Pangasinan 1 Schools Division.
       Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias-Agabas, presiding officer of the
Sangguniang Panlalawigan, told  Dr. Aurora Domingo, schools division superintendent of Pangasinan  1 Division covering the first, second and third congressional districts of the province, that the number is "very alarming".
