Punchline
The
partylist racket
By Ermin Garcia Jr.
At the rate
things are going in government and politics, plus the recent ruling
of the Supreme Court re entitlement of partylists in the House of
Representatives, governance in our benighted land has definitely
gone haywire.
Ever since the Abalos Comelec took over,
easy accreditation of partylist groups was never this easy. It was
reportedly guaranteed for P2 million, never mind what the group
pretended to represent nor what the extent of its operation or
network was.

Think about It
Gilbert
Teodoro 'most fit' for president
By Jun Velasco
OVER a cup of coffee, our friend media executive Jera
Sison, son of our late friend, Jess Sison, disputed
reports shared by former Speaker Joe de V, former
President Erap and even Bishop Oscar Cruz that there
would be no elections in 20l0 because the administration
"will ram down Charter Change into the throats of our
people."
We have tackled this many times in this
column and even warned that Filipinos, deprived
of this constitutional mandate, would take to the
streets!

Manny
talks
By Gonzalo Duque
OUR activities at the Private Schools
Athletic Association (PRISAA) have given
us interesting opportunities while
hobnobbing with the great and near-great
with ideas sprouting like pop corn that
hopefully could lead to the formulation
of a national sports development
program. Do we see
Pangulo
smiling?
There she was at the
Prisaa opening in Naga City,
perfect host, Kampi president Rep. Luis
Villafuerte, Press Sec. Cerge Remonde,
the two super Mannys — Angeles, now CHEd
chairman, and
Pangilinan of PLDT-Smart, and oh, yes,
our fellow Jaycee in the 80’s, former
Rep. Harry Ang Ping, now chairman of the
Philippine Sports Commission.

Not
only Pacquiao is world-class
By Al S. Mendoza
Happy
birthday to Dicks Estrada, the assessor of my hometown
Mangatarem, and Mangatarem Mayor Teddy Cruz, who will
both celebrate tomorrow, April 27. Here's a wish that
many, many more years would come as you are both men of
faith and eternally believe in and emulate endlessly
Dear God's limitless capacity to love. Will "crazy
water" overflow tonight? Cheers!)

IT was a Sunday Theater to behold.
Filipino boxers - two of them, especially -
had electrified us, indeed, with their performances so
that it would be worth noting again the fact we are
really a nation of world-class prizefighters.

Sports Eye
Bitter
sweet
By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.
FILIPINO boxing buffs who came to watch personally the
world title fights of our very own Brian Villoria and
Nonito Donaire, Jr. at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon
City went out from the Big Dome with a big smile.
Yes, and also the aficionados who gazed at
their living rooms.
They’re all extremely pleased and
contented how our two world renowned prizefighters and
the four appetizers of the day’s battle triumphed all
via knockouts. It was really a day for us, Filipinos, in
sports. The April 19 was a time of merriments and even
just for awhile disregard the economic crisis we are
facing of during these days.

 Shallow bliss
By
Marifi Jara
COMING home from a far less developed country, where
infrastructure is so poor, feels like stepping back into
paradise.
From
the airport, my brother drove us through the
Pampanga-Tarlac segment of the new Subic-Clark
expressway (all the while hailing how great it is).
While that was quite a short distance and I could not
really feel the advantage and convenience compared to
taking the old MacArthur highway route, especially
during the wee hours of the morning where vehicular
traffic is very light, I still felt a certain
satisfaction at seeing development happening.

Not with my son, you don't!
By
Emmanuelle
This
week,
this mother talks:
It was an indescribably difficult birth,
but finally, after twelve hours of dry labor my first
child was born. He will be my first and only son. I will
have my first and only girl many years later, but that
is another story. Let us stick to this one first.
The first time I held my son was when he
was a week-old, and I was a week-too-long in the
hospital. We spent the seven days recovering separately
from the trauma of that first birth. When the nurses
deposited him gingerly into my arms though, what we both
had was love at first sight! His big, doe eyes and his
pair of deep, wicked dimples tugged at my heart, pulled
it straight out of my ribs and dropped it right unto his
palms to do with whatever he pleased. From that moment
on, I was his mother and I was his slave.
